Japan’s Mysterious UFO Hotspot: Inside the Senganmori Mountain and International UFO Lab

Nestled in the heart of Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, lies the enigmatic Mount Senganmori, a site that has captivated UFO enthusiasts and researchers for decades. This conical mountain, rising approximately 462 meters, is a natural wonder and the epicenter of Japan’s most renowned UFO hotspot. Adjacent to it is the town of Iinomachi, which has embraced its extraterrestrial reputation by establishing the International Unidentified Flying Object (UFO) Laboratory, aiming to investigate and understand the mysterious phenomena reported in the area.

Mount Senganmori’s distinct pyramid-like shape has long been a subject of intrigue. Some locals and researchers speculate that its form is unnatural, suggesting possible artificial origins or ancient constructions. Adding to its mystique, the mountain is composed of highly magnetic rocks, which have been observed to interfere with compasses and other navigational instruments. This magnetic anomaly has led some to believe the mountain could be a beacon or point of interest for unidentified aerial phenomena.
Over the past 40 years, numerous sightings of unexplained lights and flying objects have been reported near Mount Senganmori. These accounts range from fleeting glimpses of luminous orbs to detailed observations of structured crafts. Such consistent reports have solidified the mountain’s reputation as a focal point for UFO activity in Japan.
Iinomachi, situated near Mount Senganmori, has fully embraced its association with UFO phenomena. In 1992, the town inaugurated the UFO Fureaikan Museum, which collects and displays materials related to unidentified flying objects. The museum houses approximately 3,000 items, including photographs, documents, and artifacts, offering visitors a comprehensive look into the world of UFO research.
The town’s commitment to its extraterrestrial identity is evident in its infrastructure and events. Visitors can find UFO-themed streetlights, bus stops, and even an alien statue, creating an immersive experience celebrating the town’s unique character. Annual festivals and events further promote community engagement and attract tourists nationwide and beyond.
On June 24, 2021, coinciding with World UFO Day, Iinomachi took a significant step in formalizing its research by establishing the International UFO Laboratory within the UFO Fureaikan Museum. This institution aims to collect, analyze, and disseminate information on domestic and international UFO sightings.

Takeharu Mikami, the editor-in-chief of the monthly occult magazine “Mu,” was appointed the laboratory’s first director. Under his leadership, the lab has encouraged public participation, inviting individuals to submit photographs, videos, and firsthand accounts of UFO encounters. The laboratory employs a set of criteria to assess the authenticity of submissions, considering factors such as image clarity and the possibility of natural or artificial explanations.
In its first year, the International UFO Laboratory received 452 reports of UFO sightings. Of these, 149 cases were determined to have unaltered images or videos, with a select few deemed to have a high probability of depicting genuine unidentified flying objects. The laboratory’s website and media outlets have shared these findings with the public, fostering transparency and ongoing dialogue.
The establishment of the International UFO Laboratory signifies a unique intersection of cultural fascination and scientific inquiry. While UFOs have often been relegated to science fiction or fringe theories, the laboratory’s systematic approach to data collection and analysis lends credibility to studying unexplained aerial phenomena.
Moreover, the laboratory catalyzes tourism and economic revitalization in Iinomachi. By positioning itself as a hub for UFO research and enthusiasts, the town attracts visitors eager to explore its museums, participate in events, and perhaps even witness a UFO themselves. This influx of tourism supports local businesses and fosters a sense of community pride.
Mount Senganmori and the International UFO Laboratory in Iinomachi represent a harmonious blend of mystery, culture, and scientific pursuit. As reports of unidentified aerial phenomena continue to emerge worldwide, the efforts of this small Japanese town underscore the importance of open-minded investigation and community engagement. Whether a skeptic or a believer, the story of Iinomachi invites all to look to the skies with curiosity and wonder.
