While the skies of World War II were a theater of conventional warfare, they also became the stage for some of the most baffling aerial phenomena ever recorded. Allied pilots famously reported encounters with mysterious, fast-moving orbs of light they nicknamed “Foo Fighters.” But what has remained largely unknown to the Western world is that on the other side of the conflict, Japanese soldiers were experiencing their own terrifying and inexplicable encounters with these same unidentified flying objects.

The official history of the UFO phenomenon is often said to have begun in 1947 with the Kenneth Arnold incident. However, historical records, stretching from ancient Egypt to the modern day, are filled with sightings of strange aerial craft. The crucible of World War II was no exception. For Japan, a nation in a fight for its survival, records of such events are incredibly scarce. Any strange object in the sky was likely dismissed as a new American secret weapon, and tragically, many potential witnesses never returned from the front lines to share their stories.

Despite these challenges, dedicated Japanese researchers have painstakingly pieced together a hidden history of UFO encounters from the annals of a nation at war.

The Researchers Who Uncovered the Truth

Pioneering work by early Japanese paranormal research groups has been crucial in preserving these accounts. The late Mr. Takao Ikeda of the Japan Space Phenomena Research Association scoured military magazines and journals to collect several key sightings.

One such case occurred in the autumn of 1944, when Mr. Beiji Kato, a naval aviation technician stationed in Yokosuka, witnessed a black, cigar-shaped object emitting a long, orange tail as it flew in an undulating, wave-like pattern. Despite his extensive knowledge of aircraft, Kato could not identify the object. Similar sightings were reported that year over the Bungo Channel and the following year in Gifu and Aichi prefectures.

Another group, the Cosmic Brotherhood Association (CBA), one of Japan’s earliest UFO research organizations, focused on collecting “Foo Fighter” testimonies directly from former soldiers of the Imperial Japanese Army and Navy. Their findings, published in the journal UFO News, revealed that Japanese pilots were frequently encountering the exact same phenomena as their Allied counterparts.

The Japanese military had official names for these objects: the Army called them “Hidama” (Fireballs), while the Navy referred to them as “Hidan” (Fire Bullets). On the front lines, however, pilots gave them more descriptive nicknames, like “Shabondama” (Soap Bubbles) or “Sora no Kurage” (Sky Jellyfish). Many assumed they were a new American weapon or even questioned their own sanity, only to be astonished after the war to learn that American pilots had seen the very same things.

Terrifying Eyewitness Accounts from the Pacific Front

The CBA’s archives paint a vivid picture of these bizarre encounters:

The Unshakeable Zero Fighter Escort: As early as 1942, Foo Fighters frequently shadowed the First Air Fleet (the Nagumo Task Force). One Zero pilot reported being closely escorted by a mysterious flying object that flew in perfect formation off his wing. Despite pushing his Mitsubishi A6M Zero—then one of the most maneuverable fighters in the world—to its limits, he could not shake the object. It remained locked to his position before vanishing.

The Silver Orbs of the Solomon Sea: A gunner aboard a Mitsubishi G4M bomber (known to the Allies as “Betty”) witnessed over a dozen strange silver orbs while flying over the Solomon Sea. The spheres, each about a meter in diameter, flew in a level formation 200-300 meters above and behind his aircraft before suddenly ascending at an incredible speed and disappearing.

The Chase Over Burma: A Mitsubishi Ki-46 reconnaissance plane (Allied codename “Dinah”), one of the fastest aircraft in the Japanese inventory, encountered a line of several orange spheres over the Burmese front. Built for speed and lacking any defensive armament, the pilot’s only option was to run. He pushed the plane to its top speed of over 600 km/h, banking sharply left and right, but the orbs perfectly mimicked his every move. They relentlessly pursued the aircraft for 15 minutes before accelerating to a speed far beyond its capabilities and vanishing into the distance.

The Dogfight Over Japan: In the final, desperate days of the war, as American B-29 Superfortresses firebombed Japan, their crews often reported being swarmed by Foo Fighters. But so did the Japanese pilots sent to intercept them. A squadron of Kawanishi N1K “Shiden” fighters (codenamed “George” by the Allies) was once swarmed by a group of these orbs, which danced around their planes “like playful puppies.” Several pilots attempted to engage them in a dogfight, but the Foo Fighters proved impossible targets, executing instantaneous vertical ascents that defied physics. One pilot dove on a group of nearly ten orbs, only for them to vanish microseconds before impact. As the squadron turned for home, the orbs reappeared, tailing them just a few meters above their formation, before suddenly rocketing past the entire squadron and disappearing for good.

These accounts, preserved by the diligent work of Japanese researchers, prove that the Foo Fighter phenomenon was not limited to one side of the conflict. It was a truly global mystery, experienced by soldiers of every nation who found themselves fighting not only a human enemy, but also an inexplicable and advanced presence that ruled the skies above them. The testimony of these Japanese soldiers adds a crucial, long-missing chapter to the enduring enigma of the UFO.
