In 1882, an American dentist named John Newbrough claimed to have received a divine revelation, channeled through him onto a typewriter in a process known as automatic writing. The result was the Oahspe: A New Bible, a massive tome 1.5 times the length of the Old Testament. It tells a sprawling, epic story of the cosmos, the creation of humanity, and lost continents. But hidden within its millions of words is a startling and specific prophecy: that the Japanese people are the key to humanity’s spiritual destiny.

The Oahspe’s Epic History of Humanity

The Oahspe presents a creation myth both familiar and strange. It begins with the creator god, Jehovih, who first creates the sun and planets, and then life. The first humans, the “Asu,” are guided by archangels. They are followed by a second race, the “I’hin,” a spiritually advanced and gentle people who were God’s favorites.

But paradise is lost. The I’hin interbreed against divine law, creating a third, more brutish race, the “Druk.” As humanity further diversifies, the world descends into conflict. To save his favored I’hin, God orchestrates a great famine to reset the world, sparing only the spiritually pure I’hin and the physically robust Druk.

The I’hin go on to build magnificent civilizations across the globe, but their focus on spirituality causes their physical bodies to weaken, and they lose the ability to reproduce. To save them from extinction, they are once again bred with the Druk. This union creates new races, but also reignites conflict across the world.

The Lost Continent of Pan and the Japanese Connection

This is where the story takes a turn that directly involves Japan. To save the last remnants of the pure-blooded I’hin, God decides to sink their continent—a vast landmass in the Pacific Ocean named Pan. This continent, which some believe was the inspiration for the legend of Mu, was the most sacred place on Earth, as the heavenly realms of angels and gods were said to exist directly above it.

Before sinking Pan, God commands the remaining I’hin to build fleets of ships and scatter across the globe, preserving their sacred knowledge. This narrative strongly echoes the story of Noah’s Ark and the Great Flood.

But the Oahspe makes a stunning claim: Japan is a surviving remnant of this sunken continent of Pan.

This connection is deepened by the book’s uncanny similarities to the Takenouchi Documents, a controversial set of Japanese texts that also claim to detail humanity’s true, forgotten history.

・Both texts describe a great flood and a chosen people who survive in ships.

・The Takenouchi Documents speak of humanity being divided into five colored races, a detail that mirrors the races described in the Oahspe.

・Both speak of great Pacific continents, named “Miyoi” and “Tamiara” in the Japanese texts, that were lost beneath the waves.

Japan’s Sacred Mission: The Key to World Peace?

According to the Oahspe, while modern humans are descended from the interbreeding of these ancient races, the pure bloodline of the sacred I’hin is all but lost. All but for one small group. The book claims that a few pure-blooded I’hin survivors managed to reach the last remaining piece of their sunken homeland.

The implication is staggering: the Japanese people, living on the remnant of Pan, are the last descendants of this “sacred people.”

And they have a mission. The Oahspe prophesies that world peace can only be achieved when the four “false” religions of the world are overcome. This will be accomplished through a sacred word, a divine language shared between the creator god and his chosen people. This word was sealed away long ago, and the Oahspe claims that it is the Japanese people who now hold the key to unlocking it.

Is it possible that a 19th-century American dentist channeled a text that holds the secret to Japan’s ancient origins and its future role in the world? The Oahspe remains one of the most enigmatic and fascinating texts in modern spiritual history, a “bible” that places the Land of the Rising Sun at the very center of humanity’s destiny.
