Captain Kidd’s Lost Treasure: Is the Legendary Pirate’s Fortune Hidden in Japan?

The legend of Captain William Kidd, the 17th-century Scottish privateer-turned-pirate, has captivated treasure hunters for over 300 years. His story is one of high-seas adventure, betrayal, and a colossal fortune that vanished without a trace. While many have searched for his treasure in the Caribbean and along the American coast, a tantalizing and lesser-known theory suggests the ultimate prize might be buried on a remote island in Japan.
Born in Scotland, William Kidd began his career as a respectable sea captain in New York. Commissioned as a privateer by the English government to hunt enemy ships, he eventually crossed the line into outright piracy, attacking vessels indiscriminately. His notorious career came to an end when he was captured in Boston in 1699 and sent to London for trial. He was hanged in 1701.
As the noose was placed around his neck, Kidd reportedly made a desperate, last-minute plea. “I have a great treasure hidden,” he shouted, claiming he would reveal its location in exchange for his life. The executioner ignored him, and the secret of his fortune—if it was not just a final, desperate lie—was lost. Ever since, the legend of Captain Kidd’s treasure, estimated to be worth anywhere from billions to tens of billions of dollars in today’s money, has fueled countless expeditions.
While a 2015 discovery of a shipwreck off the coast of Madagascar, believed to be Kidd’s vessel Adventure Galley, yielded silver bars and renewed excitement, the main hoard remains undiscovered. This is where the story takes an unexpected turn, leading us far from the pirate’s usual haunts to the subtropical islands of southern Japan.

The Cursed Treasure of Ōgami-jima Island
The first candidate for the treasure’s location is Ōgami-jima, a tiny, sacred island in Okinawa’s Miyako island chain. Local legend tells of a time when pirates descended upon the island, slaughtering the inhabitants save for two siblings. It’s said that all current residents are their descendants.
The connection to Captain Kidd emerged in the 1960s after a London newspaper cited a 1938 book by sociologist Tadao Kawamura, A Study of Southern Cultures. The story claimed Captain Kidd’s treasure was hidden on Ōgami-jima. The report was picked up by The New York Times and then Japanese newspapers, igniting a local treasure hunt.
The treasure is rumored to be in one of two places: a sacred cave called “Iwanuiwanupana,” or on a hill known as “Gosho-yama.” However, a dark curse is said to protect the loot. Locals whisper that anyone who has searched for the treasure has met with misfortune, ensuring it remains untouched to this day.

The Treasure Map of Takarajima
The second, and perhaps more compelling, theory points to Takarajima, an island in the Tokara archipelago whose name literally translates to “Treasure Island.” The story began in 1937 when a mysterious letter arrived at the Japanese consulate in Tokyo. The sender, identifying as a “secret intelligence agent from Southington, Connecticut,” included a copy of a map allegedly hand-drawn by Captain Kidd himself. The map suggested he had hidden treasure on an island in southwest Japan.
While the Japanese Foreign Ministry dismissed the letter, a journalist caught wind of it. When the map’s coordinates were found to match the location of Takarajima, the theory exploded in popularity.
Adding fuel to the fire, Takarajima has its own pirate lore. In 1698, during Kidd’s active years, foreign pirates reportedly landed on the island, terrorized the locals, and stayed for some time. The legend claims they left their treasure behind in a cave. The map itself describes the hiding spot as “a depression called the Valley of Death, where poisonous gas from an active volcano constantly pools,” but the exact location has never been identified.
Could Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel Treasure Island have been inspired by this very Japanese island? Some believe so. While Takarajima remains the most popular candidate, some researchers, like Japanese historian Kiyoyuki Hatakeyama, argue that the map might actually point to a different island entirely: Iriomote-jima.
Whether Captain Kidd’s desperate final words were truth or fiction, the idea that a legendary pirate’s fortune lies waiting beneath the soil of a remote Japanese island is a romantic and enduring mystery.
