The Enigma of Mt. Minakami: Japan’s Mysterious Pyramid and UFO Base?

Since Japanese occultist Katsutoki Sakai first declared Mt. Ashitake in Hiroshima a “Japanese pyramid” in 1934, numerous other pyramid-like structures have been identified across the country. Among the most famous and mysterious of these is Mt. Minakami, a solitary volcanic mountain located in Matsushiro, Nagano Prefecture.
Standing at 659 meters, Mt. Minakami has long been revered as a sacred and spiritual place, steeped in strange legends. It wasn’t until 1979, however, following the work of author Kuehiko Yamada, that the mountain was first identified as a potential man-made pyramid. Today, visitors to the Iwato Shrine on its slopes are greeted by a signpost explicitly labeled “Pyramid Entrance.” The shrine itself is a small, three-tatami-mat grotto that bears an uncanny resemblance to the entrance of an ancient Egyptian pyramid.
The mystery of Mt. Minakami deepens with its connection to modern history. During World War II, the town of Matsushiro was chosen as the site for a massive underground complex to shelter the Imperial General Headquarters from air raids. Tunnels were excavated deep into the surrounding mountains, including Mt. Minakami. Curiously, while the network of tunnels remains, the entrance on Mt. Minakami has been sealed. The official reason is unstable ground, but persistent rumors suggest the excavation was a cover for mining something far more valuable or secretive.
But the most extraordinary claims about Mt. Minakami are linked to UFOs and extraterrestrial intelligence. Local signboards offer a stunning explanation for the mountain’s existence, stating it was “artificially constructed by a group of scientists with technology far superior to modern science as a spacecraft airbase.” They claim the mountain was formed by “instantly teleporting earth, rocks, and stones.”
Furthermore, the lore of the Tenchi Kagome no Miya, a shrine located on the mountain, asserts that this is a holy land where countless gods, and even figures like Moses and Christ, descended and gathered under a divine message from the original creator god.
Perhaps the most compelling piece of evidence supporting the mountain’s paranormal nature occurred during the “Matsushiro swarm earthquakes,” a series of seismic events that shook the area for nearly five years starting in 1965. During this period of intense geological activity, a bizarre phenomenon was widely reported: Mt. Minakami began to glow.

A conventional scientific explanation suggests the light was caused by the piezoelectric effect, where quartz within granite rock emits light when fractured under pressure from the earthquakes. However, geological surveys have shown that Mt. Minakami contains very little quartz, casting serious doubt on this theory. Some researchers now speculate that the glowing was a form of energy release from something hidden deep within the mountain. To this day, the cause of the light remains officially unexplained.
Is Mt. Minakami a natural volcano, a secret military base, an ancient man-made pyramid, or an alien outpost? The mountain keeps its secrets close, leaving us with a fascinating enigma that blends history, spirituality, and otherworldly possibilities.
